Our current projects and campaigns are focused around the idea that every individual who dies in Darfur has a name and a story.
Stand For The Dead is a fully integrated campaign that engages and inspires Canadians to Stand for the life of one Darfuri victim of genocide. Students on University Campuses and High Schools across Canada will proudly wear T-shirts with one victim’s name across their chest to Stand up and take a stance against the loss and suffering of one mother, father, son or daughter. What will start as curiosity and wonder will evolve into a veritable social movement; an entire generation of empowered students representing individual lives, and individual stories of those who no longer have the opportunity to speak of the atrocities they endured.
Every single name and story that make up the 400,000+ recorded deaths needs to be heard, only then will the enormity of genocide be experienced and understood for what it really is.

Stand Canada has a number of advocacy projects on the go.
- Parliamentary Engagement: We continue to schedule meetings with Members of Parliament, Senators and bureaucrats. The focus of this continuous engagement is to educate parliamentarians, inform them of possible actions they can take, and to get the issue on to the policy agenda.
- Consultation: Stand consults regularly with various organizations and people to share our ideas, stimulate our own thinking, and combine efforts in areas/projects that we agree upon.
- Policy Development: Although Stand continuously examines its policy recommendations, currently, we are conducting a complete review. The purpose of this review is to refine our existing recommendations and introduce new ones in such a way as to be more adoptable for MPs in the current climate.
- Election Planning: Elections are a great opportunity to get candidates talking about issues that are important to Canadians. That is why Stand has a dedicated election advocacy team who is working on getting Darfur on the policy agenda in the next federal election (whenever it is to take place).
For the past three years, Stand Canada, in conjunction with multiple NGOs, have organized large concerts and rallies in April to unite people with the aim of creating political momentum and intervention surrounding the genocide occurring in Darfur. Rallies have been held in Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa. Previous attendance levels have been at a minimum 800 people and at its largest over 2500 people. The events have all received large news coverage and shown to bring an incredibly high youth turnout. Former rallies have included bi-partisan political representation, Senator Romeo Dallaire, Justin Trudeau and Bedouin Soundclash.
Every year STAND advocates from across the country meet and discuss ideas to fight against genocide. Conference sessions and workshops feature experts in advocacy, management, media, and a myriad of other skills to help make Stand advocates the best in Canada.
STAND’s Annual General Conference will be held in Toronto in September 2009. Applications will open in August. Check back here regularly for information regarding itinerary and registration information in your area.
