Secondary Policy Asks

  • Engage China in a constructive dialogue seeking the cessation of arms sales to Sudan and greater operational access for UNAMID.
  • Provide humanitarian aid to help mitigate the intense suffering caused by the conflict.
  • Support the ICC indictment of Omar al Bashir.
  • Provide training to UNAMID personnel for dealing with gender-based violence.
  • Use Canada’s leverage at both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund to make debt assistance conditional upon Sudan’s full cooperation with efforts to end the crisis in Darfur.
  • Be more vocal about the increasing number of missed deadlines relating to the CPA. If Khartoum is not held accountable to the CPA, it is less likely to adhere to future peace agreements relating to Darfur, and a renewal of north-south violence would have disastrous consequences for Darfur.
